First Canoe Race of the Year

This last Saturday was the kid's first race of the year: 15 miles down the river, about a 2-21/2 hour worth of hard paddling.

And they're off!!!






Matthais and his partner work really well together; they're both very serious and competitive about their canoeing. They came in first in their class:



Asilinn and Katla were on a team with another young lady. Asilinn began the race with the other girl and paddled half of the race. Katla rode in the safety boat and switched out with Asilinn. About 20 minutes or so later, her partner, though a more experienced canoer, began to have problems with her elbow and arm. At first it hurt, then she began to loose sensation in that arm. They flagged down the safety boat and switched back. So Asilinn ended up having to paddle most of the race and by the end she had really run out of steam; however, she didn't give up!



I'm really looking forward to warmer weather and being able to participate in the canoeing with the kids and Elias. We all really enjoyed it last year. After the heat of the summer day, an evening on the cool river is a nice way to relax.
