Grandma's Gift

Ok, Mom helped some too.

During their recent visit, Grandma Huff brought me the result of a project she and my Mom had been working on.

Grandma cut out, decorated, and laced up this recipe box that is filled with hand copied family recipes. Each card is in the distinctive handwriting of one or the other and notes the individual who first shared the recipe. Of course, G.Great Aunt Bertha's recipes are in there along with ones from G.G. Grandma Mae Seizert, G.G. Grandma Martha Donaldson, distant cousins, aunts, old family friends, and my siblings. It includes a whole selection of diabetic recipes compiled by Grandma Scott.

One of the recipes made me laugh: it was one written out for a homework assignment by my brother when he was 6. (he's in his mid 30's now)
Chocolate Cake
Put a chocolate cake mix in a pan. Add 1 c. milk, a little water and mix it together and put it in the oven. Make the oven real hot. Bake for 9-10 min. Take it out when the cake is done. The cake is done when a little bell dings and rings. Then eat it. I like the eating part.

He has since branched out to more difficult recipes, especially if it involves a grill, but I think he still likes the eating part best. :)

What a wonderful and thoughtful gift!
Thank You so much!!

That's so great that you have all those old, hand-written recipe cards! The box is lovely too.

Jayne, my cousins and I are working on a similar project - a cookbook and memory book (to be printed and bound) for our extended family. I love old recipes! My grandma used to just keep lists of ingredients; she was so good in the kitchen - even with baking - that she didn't put down amounts on the recipe cards. :)

That is a wonderful gift. What I wouldn't give to have a recipe in my grandmothers hand writing.
